This
New Mexico filly has gone down in history books undefeated and setting
a new American Racing Record.
There
are many Thoroughbreds who make their mark on history throughout
the years. From Man O’ War to John Henry, they are all legends
of their own. In recent days, however, there is a newcomer to American
world record holders – a little filly by the name of Pepper’s
Pride by Desert God and out of Lady Pepper. ‘Who?’ You
might ask. Well, she’s a New Mexico bred filly who just set
a new North American record in 2008 and joins the ranks of those
of Citation, Cigar, Mister Frisky, and Hallowed Dreams.
The previous record
holder, a filly named Hallowed Dreams, held the record for 16 straight
wins from her first race. Pepper’s Pride was poised to break
that record in early October of 2008. She won that race with an
easy 1 ¾ length lead over the field. She then went on to
pad her new record with two more wins before the year ended. She
now holds the new record for 19 straight wins and remains undefeated,
making her truly a remarkable mare. In her last race, Peppers Pride
gave 7 to 12 pounds against a quality field in the $125,000 New
Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap won with an outstanding
display of ability.
Proudly dubbed “Queen
of New Mexico Racing,” Pepper’s Pride ran exclusively
in New Mexico. Her owners and trainers were often criticized for
not running her in bigger races, but they knew their horse and did
what they felt was in her best interest. Of their remarks they say
“If it’s so easy, I’m surprised there haven’t
been 100 of them like her.” She is now officially retired
happy and sound and is currently booked to Tiznow for a breeding
in 2009.
